During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, the activities of the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the USSR were multifaceted, in addition to the tasks that it faced in peacetime, the People's Commissariat was entrusted with a number of additional tasks due to wartime. Successfully fulfilling the tasks assigned to it during the war years, the NKVD of the USSR was also a reliable reserve for manning the Active Red Army and Navy. The NKVD of the USSR allocated personnel for the formation of units and formations of the Red Army, in a number of cases formations and units of the NKVD troops of the USSR were transferred to the Red Army and the Navy in full force. The servicemen of the NKVD troops of the USSR, who had good military training, were distinguished by a high level of service discipline, high personal responsibility for the entrusted work, became an excellent replenishment for the Red Army and the Navy.
