the article examines the activities of the NKVD of the USSR in organizing and leading the partisan movement during the Great Patriotic War of 1941 – 1945. In the first days of the war, the NKVD bodies, together with the party organizations of the front-line regions, launched work on the preparation and dispatch of partisan detachments, extermination, sabotage and reconnaissance groups to the enemy's rear. Some of the partisan formations were created on the basis of the NKVD extermination battalions, from employees of local NKVD bodies. An important role in the development of the partisan movement was played by the border troops, which directly created partisan formations for operations in the enemy's rear. The servicemen of the NKVD troops, who found themselves behind enemy lines, switched to partisan methods of struggle, a number of them led partisan detachments. NKVD employees headed or became members of the regional headquarters of the partisan movement. The article contains biographical data of representatives of the NKVD who made a great contribution to the development of the partisan movement.
