The article is devoted to a retrospective of video surveillance systems in the city of Moscow, the his-tory of their development and implementation in the residential sector, urban economy and transport facilities is described. Differences in the principles of operation of urban and transport systems of face recognition were considered, their comparison was carried out, the advantages and disadvantages of each were indi-cated. The article describes the use of video surveillance systems in the interests of solving and investi-gating crimes, a specific, typical example is given. The judicial practice of using systems was studied and the existing problematic issues were indicated.
