The current state, problematic issues of a legal and organizational nature related to the use of tech-nical and software tools for identifying offenders by employees of the internal affairs bodies of the Russian Federation are considered, and directions for further improvement of the activities of internal affairs bodies in this area are proposed. Methodological basis: the study was conducted using such methods as formal legal, analysis, systematic approach, expert assessments, etc. A comprehensive analysis of the main regulations and materials of law enforcement practice on the subject of the study, as well as available statistical data, was carried out. The systematic approach made it possible to identify the main directions for further improvement of the field of application of technical means by employees of internal affairs bodies. The purpose of the study is to identify the main factors influencing the use by internal affairs agencies of the capabilities of technical and software tools for identifying offenders. Conclusions. Based on the analysis of the current state of legal regulation and the practical appli-cation by internal affairs agencies of technical and software tools for identifying offenders, the au-thors conclude that it is necessary to adopt regulatory legal acts and organizational measures aimed at improving efficiency in the field under consideration
