The article is devoted to the problems connected with the identification of unidentified corpses, which is one of the most difficult areas in criminology. The most common and effective method of identifica-tion is to identify a corpse by handprints. Of great difficulty are those cases when an unidentified corpse has undergone putrefactive changes, as a result of which traditional methods of fingerprinting it become unusable. The forensic literature describes several methods of fingerprinting corpses that have undergone various degrees of decomposition (for example, using methods to enhance the relief of papillary pat-terns of the dermis by treating the fingers of the hands of a corpse in heated oils or acetic acid solu-tions). The practical application of these methods gives quite good results, but they have disadvantages. The authors propose that the treatment of fingers with hot water is the optimal method for obtain-ing the highest quality prints. The technique using heated water is quite simple and does not require any special technical means, chemical reagents and special laboratory utensils.
