In the scientific article, the author substantiates the relevance and significance of the process of forming and putting forward investigative versions at the initial stages of a criminal investigation. In investigative practice, negative phenomena such as the initial inconsistency of investigative versions put forward by the subjects of the investigation, problems with proving the guilt of a person, and the presentation to court of criminal cases with an insufficient evidence base occur on a systematic basis. The entire set of the above-mentioned negative circumstances usually leads to extremely low efficiency in the investigation of criminal cases, a large number of acquittals announced by the court, and, as a consequence, a low level of public trust in the activities of law enforcement agencies in general. At the initial stages of modern forensic investigative activity, there is an acute need for timely and high-quality investigative versions that can direct the investigation of criminal case along the path of reliably establishing all the circumstances of the crime committed, and making lawful, well-founded and motivated procedural decisions on it.
